Sorry it's taken a while, but here's a synopsis of what was going
wrong.

I erroneously made the assumption that RedHat 7.1 fixed the gcc kernel
problems, but it didn't.  Not only do you have to use kgcc on 7.0,
but on 7.1 as well.  Silly problem really.  I did at one point switch
to the kgcc, but didn't do a 'make mrproper', which did eventually
make the difference.
