Linux jdc 2.4.24-pre1-xfs #2 Wed Dec 31 14:05:41 EST 2003 i686
(yes I know I should have upgraded. I've deleted the 2.4 tree and
downloaded 2.6 but haven't tried it yet; nor have I upgraded to
2.4.25 as I was plannig to try 2.6).
Symtpoms: the system hung during shutdown ("unmounting local
filesystems"); there were no errors on screen or in the logs.

I then started the machine from another partition that has a very old
Linux installation on it (an ancient XFS kernel), copied over the
xfs_check program from the main filesystem, unmounted it and ran
xfs_check, with the following output:
agi unlinked bucket 42 is 60330 in ag 18 (inode=75557802)
allocated inode 75557802 has 0 link count
I was able to boot the system normally, but obviously I am worried
about these events and want to take all prudent steps to preserve
the data on the filesystem and correct whatever the problem is. The
only other bootable medium I have is the partition with an extremely
old kernel on it, from which I can run xfs utilities (copied across if
This filesystem has been running well since the end of 2001.
Please let me know if there are any further tests you would like
completed, or additional information that would help identify the cause.
