Did you try to use high optimizations for the compile? Or did you compile a i586 kernel on a AMD K6 machine (which often fails). I suspect that either the following might be a problem: - Buggy compiler (what are you using) - Compiling for the wrong architecture (what are you compiling for) - Hardware problem (Failing fan, memory).
