I can now report that my system boots with an XFS root partition. I'm posting this here in the hope that it might save someone some time and frustration in the future. The fix was to add the followin

That's bogus. The default's for x86 will build MSDOS partition support with CONFIG_MSDOS_PARTITION undefined. Something else is going on. I have plenty of machines which boot of XFS filesystems and I
